RV Park: Michigan City Campground (Indiana)
Location: Michigan City, Indiana
Proximity to town: Michigan City is a little town just outside the banks of Lake Michigan. The campground is close to the town, and 34 miles from South Bend, Indiana. Looking to stay close to Chicago, but not too close? Chicago is 50 miles away. Cost: 43.00 a night (Pull-through 30/50 amp) Dates: July 22-23
Space: I am in a pull-through site. There is plenty of room in between each of the spaces. Most campers have the awnings up, and enough area to sit outside, have a campfire in the provided rings, and enjoy the flickering of the lightning bugs (I love these bugs)! Bonus? There are tall trees in between many of the sites, so I feel like I am in nature!
Facilities: The office / store is average. The people working here are helpful and kind. I got here late, about a half an hour from closing, but they still made sure I had everything I needed to be comfortable for the night.
When I am traveling solo, having a staff that I can rely on is important to me. For instance, I called a few hours outside of Michigan City, because it was taking far longer to get to my destination than I had planned. The person on the end of the phone told me not to worry. If I got to the campground after nine, all I had to do is call and let them know I’d be late, and they would set up everything for me. RVers know that late check-in is inevitable, but here, there is a security gate, so just driving in late isn’t super easy. Knowing I could still check in after hours was a relief.
The bathroom and the shower? Less than desirable. There are three toilet stalls and three shower stalls. There are so many tent sites here. Based on everyone walking around in bathing suits, water sports are a big draw to this campground. The water sports mean flip-flops and mud. Mud means dirty bathroom floors in the bathroom. Dirty, muddy floors, and wet hair over every surface. Ew.
Amenities: This RV park has a gated entrance. I love that about it. I rely on ratings when I am traveling solo. I need to feel safe and secure, and I like to know that I am not staying in some shady campsite. Knowing that I had to have a code to get into the site is security. I am willing to pay a few extra dollars for that piece of mind.
Practice what you park: The ratings on the Good Sam site are spot-on. I didn’t feel like I got anything that I didn’t expect. In fact, the campground is prettier, more secluded, and more peaceful than I expected. That is a win!
Other information (road noise, etc): The campground is far away from the highway. It is secluded, and I feel like I am in nature, and not on a cement pad in the middle of the city. Even though I am just stopping through, I would stay here for a longer period if I could.
